What we’re listening to now, as told by Allison

-Allison Dee, Roots N Blues Intern

I made this playlist as a little cure to the summer heat. It’s early August, which that means it’s extremely hot and humid here in mid-Missouri. No seriously, as soon as I step outside my door, I start sweating. Getting into my car after it’s been sitting in the sun is a whole other type of hot, as I carefully try not to burn my hands on the steering wheel or my thighs on the seat.

The songs I picked are a nice little “cool off” from the pop-y songs of today’s top 100. I like to listen to a lot of these songs as I relax by the pool, chill out in my air-conditioned apartment or hang out with my friends at a bonfire, especially when the night is a little bit cooler.

Some of these songs are new, while others are oldies that have been my favorites for awhile that I still constantly listen to. One of these oldies that I will never get sick of is “Unbelievers” by Vampire Weekend. The first time I fell in love with Vampire Weekend was when I saw them perform live at Lollapalooza in the summer of 2013. Ever since then, they have been one of my go-to bands to listen to when I want to chill out yet still have an upbeat, happy vibe.

On the other side of the spectrum, one song that I’m really into right now is “Turn” by The Wombats. Although this song isn’t as upbeat as some of my favorite Vampire Weekend jams, it is the perfect chill out song to sing along to.

The overall genre of the playlist I would say would be alt-indie with some alt-rock thrown in there, too. While I tried to focus on making the playlist with some songs that are not as well as known, I still added some popular tracks like “Genghis Khan” by Miike Snow and “Ways To Go” by Grouplove because they are genuinely feel good songs.

If you want a feel good playlist to relax to while escaping this July heat, give my playlist a listen!
