On the night of September 12th, 2017, tens of thousands of people donning Avett Brothers T-shirts lined the insides of theaters across the country. These fans were all queued, waiting to see the intimate portrayal of the Avett Brothers in their film “May it Last.” Of course, most of the Roots N Blues staff went to the viewing, and we all brought with us individual memories associated with the band and their music. Our assistant festival director played ping-pong with the brothers at the 2014 festival. One of the interns has a tattoo of Avett Brothers’ lyrics on his forearm. Meanwhile, I was a fan, but not that intensely. This quickly changed as I had a steady flow of tears throughout the entire film. I listened to all nine albums in succession the next day.
Needless to say, the film was incredible. According to Rotten Tomatoes, “May it Last” has a 99 percent positive rating. The only downfall is that the documentary was only played on one night only. As a marketing ploy, this was genius. Theaters were packed everywhere as people raced to go see this film on the only day they could. Now, however, fans are itching for more. Either they want to see it again, or they missed the chance originally. Because of this, the band had seemingly no other choice than to add encore dates.
If you haven’t already seen it, go see it. Or if you have, see it again. If you’re hesitant on seeing it, still go. It’s absolutely worth it.
And hey, we’ll make it easy. Click here to see the encore dates and locations.
