Paul Thorn

Paul Thorn_Web205x170It is no argument that Paul Thorn of Tupelo, Miss., has an noteworthy background. It is also no argument that he is deserving of his current success as a singer/ songwriter. His influences descend from his traveling youth, playing gospel in churches with his parents, but to Thorn, it’s hard not to mention the weight of his uncle, formerly a pimp, on his childhood. “I was raised by pimps and preachers,” says Thorn, when asked about the history behind his 2010 album Pimps and Preachers. “So I know that nobody is all good and nobody is all bad.” That ideal stuck with Thorn into his adult life as a professional boxer, becoming the mid-South middleweight champion. “Boxing prepared me for the life I live now,” claims Thorn. Identifying himself as a “country, gospel, blues rock” artist, Thorn’s history comes out in his songs. They reveal that in each songwriter there is a past that has everything to do with what they tell others through their music. Before, Thorn was a champion in the ring, but now, to many he’s a champion of songs.Paul Thorn’s new album Too Blessed To Be Stressed stakes out new territory for the popular roots-rock songwriter andperformer. “In the past, I’ve told stories that were mostly inspired by my own life,” the former prizefighter and literal son of a preacher man offers. “This time, I’ve written 10 songs that express more universal truths, and I’ve done it with a purpose: to make people feel good.”
